Changing the Narrative on Suicide.
Thursday 10 September marks World Suicide Prevention Day, an annual global
campaign dedicated to raising awareness, reducing stigma and encouraging action
to prevent suicide.
The theme for 2024–2026 is ‘Changing the Narrative on Suicide’. It encourages
us to move away from silence and stigma towards greater understanding, openness
and support.
This year’s World Suicide Prevention Day is particularly significant for workplaces
following the publication of BS 30480 Suicide and the Workplace, the first national
workplace suicide prevention standard. Developed with contributions from
organisations including MHFA England®, the standard provides practical guidance to
help employers strengthen their approach to suicide prevention, including support
pathways, policies and response planning.
With clear guidance now available, every organisation has an opportunity to review
how it supports the wellbeing of its people. Creating a workplace culture where
colleagues feel able to speak openly, recognise when someone may be struggling
and know how to respond appropriately can make a meaningful difference.
Suicide prevention should be an integral part of an organisation’s wider approach to
mental health and wellbeing, rather than something addressed only when a crisis
occurs.
Build Your Skills
Suicide prevention begins long before someone reaches a point of crisis. Developing
awareness and confidence across your organisation can help people recognise
when someone may need support and understand how to respond appropriately.
